HISTORY OF KOPIMAS:
In 1841, the first White Rajah of Sarawak, Sir James Brooke, started his rule in Sarawak. The government recruited Europeans, mostly British, to run the civil service. The locals were exposed to the European culture and the practice of coffee drinking was introduced to Sarawak. A Chinese immigrant from Southern China was employed by a British officer to work as a chef in a club and with this opportunity he learned how coffee beans were processed. The skills were passed down from generation to generation. Over the years, his successors have improved and created new techniques of how coffee beans are processed and turned it into a famous coffee brand in Sarawak called Kopimas. Kopimas is a portmanteau of the word `Kopi-‘ which is a Malay word for coffee and ‘Mas’ which means gold. The brand is a sign of good quality. Now, everyone can sit down and relax and enjoy a cup of freshly brewed coffee from Kopimas.
